i hate sugar

Whispering Canyon desserts
Cobbler tastes great and is part of the Holiday season.

i hate sugar.

Why?

Because it has such alluring properties.

It never tastes bad.

In fact, it generally tastes amazing.

So yeah, i hate that.

Especially when there isn’t a fresh fruit antidote nearby.

Cravings and habits are synonymous

Blueberries
Apples are great right now. Blueberries from South America are coming into season too. Pictured are jumbo (left) and regular.

Fresh fruit at the peak of ripeness is my go-to defense against sugar cravings (habits).

Apples from Washington State are really coming into season.

By the way, rationalizing that sweets are justifiable because we work so hard, etc, etc, is also a habit.

How to handle an irresistible urge for dessert

Gene Wilder quote
Screen shot from LinkedIn a couple months ago..

Last night after a simple, and solo, dinner – Cheryl’s at Disney, Chapin is in San Francisco – i had an almost irresistible urge for a sugary dessert.

Since i already had my one weekly allotment on Sunday night, i knew this was a battle i needed to win.

i also knew that if i could distract myself through some activity that would put time between dinner and the urge, that i stood a fighting chance.

It worked.

i’m telling you though, when you’re alone, tired, and feeling the urge, there are a million reasons why “this time won’t hurt, it’s just a small exception”.

Letting go of sugar

Universal Studios Orlando construction 2016
Our habits slowly become immovable mountains. Photo: Universal Studios Orlando yesterday.

Letting go of sugar is  impossible challenging for us because we’ve grown up on it.

Decades worth of habit, reliance, and acceptance.

What would it take to let go of sugar?

Survived the sugar temptation

Toy owl
Owls look wise because that’s what we’ve been led to believe.

Self-control was alive and well yesterday. Mostly because i was too busy talking and catching up to worry about food. Good thing too. Much of the Christmas spread was sugar-laden.
