Maybe It's Impossible

The constant challenge to find time to exercise

The constant challenge to find time to exercise is enough to make a sane person lose their mind. (Tweet that)

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

Need Help Not Giving Up?

Best advice for what to do when you don’t want to do it

Universal Studios thrill ride
Yesterday afternoon running past Universal Studios.

Best advice for what to do when you don’t want to do it?

Get creative.

You need a reason to trick yourself into just getting started.

Why?

Because once you start, you will quickly begin to feel better.

It’s overcoming the initial inertia that seems daunting.

So i rationalized…

i’ll run to my dentist because i owed them a phone call. Afterwards, i experimented with running through Universal Studios.

From not running to 7.5 miles.

Magic?

Yes.

PS. Was at Gold’s Gym Orlando when i began the run, just a mile down the road from Universal Studios.

How Much Is Enough?

The rarity is making it acceptable

Steve Jobs quote
There’s a time and a place for everything.

No gym two days ago. No run this morning.

Rare in retirement to miss either.

Why?

Because i’m so much more in control of my time.

Some recent entrepreneurial deadlines have put pressure on this retirement luxury.

Because it rarely happens, i’m not going to sweat it.

Day To Day

The repetitive and redundant nature of daily living leaves us with one of two choices

Disneyland entrance plaque
Same old, same old, day after day?

The repetitive and redundant nature of daily living leaves us with one of two choices:

  1. Find a million ways to stay motivated each day to thrive in spite of the intense pressures
  2. Give up staying motivated and accept mediocrity

Pretty sure it’s that simple.

What's Our Obligation?

Our goal is to have very few days, if any at all, like this

Mid Life Celebration excerpt
Work will always be one of the highest ranked excuses for not exercising.

Ran for an hour yesterday. Ran 50 minutes the day before that.

While running, thought this morning would be another great opportunity for a long, slow run.

Awoke at 2:30am and it’s now six hours later.

No run.

Time for more work.

No time to run, not even one mile?

Nope.
