Semper Gumby

Never gets old.
Bears are not interested in eating humans. Obviously there are exceptions to nearly everything.
This photo shows the bear doing what it knows it must do. Eat like crazy before hibernation. Like humans, every bear is different. Make no mistake, a different bear in this same circumstance could be dangerous and potentially deadly.

Semper Gumby translates to “always flexible”.

Having Cheryl here for three weeks is the coolest.

Last year’s solo visit (due to Covid) saw me wear out a pair of running shoes (i always hike in running shoes) midway through the 50-day work-visit.

This year the hiking is less. Driven by trailhead parking availability and Many Glacier Road closing Sept 19, and, huge crowds.

Finding alternatives has been and remains wonderful.

City sidewalks, busy sidewalks

Two story white cottage house
Sunday morning city walks are delightful when there is 90% available parking. Most have no idea what this means. But you do. We met the owner, Rhonda. She came to Whitefish in 1977.

Glacier has been a challenging opportunity this year.

Overcrowding has forced some creative decision-making this year. Overcrowding is also driving next year’s creative solutions.

This is a first-world “problem”. We recognize this. We are Disney. We welcome the opportunity to flex our world-class, time-tested Disney creativity to reach innovative solutions.

Adapt and overcome.

This is the way.

Plans fall through sometimes

Mountains and lake
Iconic Wild Goose Island.
Mountain Cottage
Luxury accommodations. Our friend booked the three-bedroom cabin for a college reunion next year.

Yesterday’s plan had two hiking options. Low probability for Mt Oberlin. We knew that going in.

Scenic Point is literally a sure thing with parking, no matter time of day.

We did neither.

It happens.

The day still ranked as an “A” for experience, yet an “F” for exercise.

We are okay with that.

Odds favor the prepared

Mountains
Piegan Glacier. The enormity of the landscape can make a large glacier seem small.

Ample parking blessed us at Siyeh Bend. Just two miles west at Logan Pass, parking is a painful circus. Demand crushes availability. From 6am-4pm.

(Had Siyeh Bend parking been full, we would continue our plan to hike Scenic Point trail in Two Medicine.)

Weather was trending warmer yet we started with maximum layers.

Time would tell how the higher elevation winds would treat us.

Roll with it

Mountain
This is a path less traveled.

Crowds in general and overcrowded roads, parking lots, and trails specifically are the new, extended normal.

Roll with it.
