To run at Disney or to run nearby

(photo: running affords the ability to walk to the end of our driveway and begin exercising… no driving, no special equipment… any time, any day)

Cousin from Jacksonville arrived last night for a 5k at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex this morning.

She also has a fondness for Epcot’s Food and Wine Festival which is in full swing right now.

Debating whether to start this morning’s run from the mailbox, or drive to Disney and slip into the sea of runners and be a 5k crasher.

What would you do?

When is it ok to give up on our wellness?

Windermere, Florida Run Among the Lakes 5k 2014
Ten years ago this event was the first 5k ever

A decade ago, the first 5k was run in 22:10.

Real life in real time…

Preparation for yesterday’s 5k felt completely out of synch. One very slow, freezing, 30-minute jog in Winnipeg in the past week.

Arrived for the 5k and didn’t even feel like warming up.

So the bar was set low – running 22:10 seemed like a fair goal.

Goal 22:10, actual 22:06 (7:07 average mile pace)

Competing only with ourselves is still a competition

Central Florida Lake and clouds from Delta jet
Only 20 minutes from landing and being able to sleep at home – priceless

Stay healthy. Have fun.

Competing only with ourselves is still a competition.

Will take anything near 22:10 in this morning’s Windermere Run Among The Lakes 5k.

Yesterday’s long trip home from Winnipeg was safe and easy.

Yesterday, such a trivial photo on such a trivial morning…

Note: The remaining four posts today will be the ones originally written 100 days ago. And of course the posts written yesterday, today, and the days to come will involve Cooper and this experience.

Yesterday, such a trivial photo on such a trivial morning…

LSD for 53 minutes yesterday, knowing two things:

  1. Leaving tomorrow for a five-day Winnipeg trip.
  2. The day after returning is the annual tradition of the very first 5k ever.

This morning, a mile time trial to run sub six without keeling over. This will be a small sign of decent (but not excellent) readiness.

What do we use to stay motivated?

In life, what do we do when we start out too strong, and feel like we can’t finish?

Same thing in a race. Back off some, regain our composure, then keep going.

Two mile combined split 13:47… the goal at this point was 14:15 (two miles at 7:15 and 7:00).

iPhone screen shot of 5k mile splits
5k: 1st mile 6:39, 2nd mile 7:07

So I stopped and walked for half a minute.

What do we use to stay motivated?

Eyes always on the goal.

Windermere 5k 50-54M race results
5k goal was sub 22:00

Breaking 22 minutes felt like victory, even though walking felt like failure.

Keep going.
