Why experimentation is critical for older athletes

speed work
the faster you can run 800's and 1500's, the easier it is to run 3 consecutive 7:08's

Why is experimentation critical for older athletes? Because it stimulates our mind, which fuels our body’s sense of adventure. So this morning I went on a mini-adventure. Ran four miles, with the adventure coming in the second mile. The goal was to run the fastest 800 (but not hurt myself) in years. It was exciting to run 2:44

Knowing I ‘m traveling today to Michigan for three days to speak, I’ll use these travel days as a rest from running. The 5k is in four days. Ya with me?

One simple example of how I work diligently to keep exercising

5k race pace
freaky how good I've become at pace...the harder you work, the luckier you get

My goal for the upcoming Windermere, Florida 5k is to run the same or better time I ran in the inaugural 5k seven or eight years ago…22:10…. Pace is critical for enjoying your run. Start too fast and the race quickly becomes a nightmare. Too slow and you live with regret for not pushing yourself to your best.

You can learn pace by practicing – this engages me to keep exercising. I always run with a stopwatch and have learned what a six, seven and eight minute mile pace feels like…
