If you hate running, you’re doing it wrong

Yesterday.

A relative asked for advice on how to get ready for a “Warrior 5k” in only four weeks.

Also yesterday, a former colleague “wished everything didn’t hurt” when she tried running.

Two thoughts:

  1. Slow and steady wins the race.
  2. If you don’t like running, you’re doing it wrong.

What makes me an expert? Don’t really know, except that i run. A lot. And have for a long time.

Try to hate running?

Middle school classroom cat

(photo: How did one stray cat become so lucky to have a middle school classroom to call home?)

Baby Boomers must manage their own luck.

Hope you get to the point where you hate running. Because when you do, you’ll know you love it.

If this sounds confusing it’s because it sort of is. Until you understand that it’s not.

What starts out as a groove, say running, eventually becomes a rut. No one likes ruts. And you have to love something in order to climb out of the rut and thrive again.

Like all worthwhile things in life, lifetime motivation to not quit (running in this example) is key.

The only time you should ever hate running

data is everywhere
What does the data show about the pros and cons of running?

A friend said he was thinking about running. As in becoming a ‘runner’.

He’s never been a runner. He’s mid to late 40’s.

People who aren’t runners generally hate running.

Why hate running?

Told him the only time you should ever hate running is when you are doing too much of it.

Because she loves to run, we think she loves to run

Wellness word cloud
The successful ones always seem to have something we never will

Because she loves to run, we think she loves to run.

But she struggles.

And no one knows.

Some days, and often for weeks at a time, she struggles to enjoy it.

She wants to quit.

It becomes a have to do, a need to do, not a get to do.

This is truth and when we feel like her, plow through it.

Anything…

But do not quit!

But I hate running

How difficult is it to be a swimmer?

But I hate running…

USA Track & Field (USATF) is the National Governing Body for track & field, long-distance running and race walking in the United States. USATF encompasses the world’s oldest organized sports, the World’s #1 Track & Field Team, the most-watched events at the Olympics, the #1 high school and junior high school participatory sport, and more than 30 million adult runners in the United States: www.usatf.org.

Personally, I think running is genius. Do the math. Anywhere. Anytime. Alone or in groups. Fast or slow. Long or short.

As children, we couldn’t help ourselves.

Conformity put an end to that though, didn’t it?

Conformity says, not today, I’m too busy, tired, distracted.
