National Championships in 2011

Missed it last year too…

The 2011 Master’s Track & Field Indoor National Championships will be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, March 4-6.

I will not be there.

Of course, this is a trivial issue for all of you. In fact, I’d go as far as saying, unless you’re my Mother, you don’t care.

That’s okay, we can still be friends. But let this “disappointment” be another one of many, in the quest for an impossible goal.

Last night at Gold’s Gym, our Son asked why are the out of shape people in the ‘before’ pictures never smiling and the same people in the ‘after’, in shape pictures, always smiling?

Then he answered his own question and I replied, “Exactly!”

Lane 8 is the worst lane. It’s the lane the slowest contestant gets. Someone has to come in last. Failure, right? But what if it were in the finals, at the Olympics. Coming in last means you’re the 8th best in the entire world….

How much hype surrounds diet and exercise?

Exactly, but you won’t find any here.

If you’re looking for authenticity, encouragement, hope, ideas, tips, and strategies to get healthier and stay healthier, welcome to Lane 8.

Friends once told me I don’t need to worry about diet and exercise. I shot back, “It’s because I DO worry about it everyday – that’s why it looks like that to you.”

I write short, pithy posts each morning about health matters. At 51, the results speak for themselves. I guarantee you’ll think differently about your health if you visit each day.

And different is what most most people need, because doing the same things and expecting different results, is….well….you know the saying….

What I can’t guarantee is if you’ll make slow and steady positive changes. That’s up to you.

Ever find yourself having challenges practicing what you preach?

We all do. It’s part of our human condition to be perfectly imperfect.

Lane 8 is about our physical responsibility to lead a healthy life and to be a role model for others.

Last year got a script for my “Over 50″ recommended, routine colonoscopy. A whole year passed. Never got it done.

So this past January, I resolved to get it done asap.

That asap turned into another whole year passing.

Hypocrite?!

Only yesterday did I have the initial consultation with a most impressive Gastroenterologist.

2011 World Championships?

2009 Worlds in Finland

How lofty are your health goals? How dedicated are you to achieving them? Are you committed for your lifetime?

After last years 43rd place at the Master’s Track & Field World Championships, where 7 of the 8 Americans representing the US made it to the semi-finals (I was the one that didn’t), it was very exciting to hear that the 2011 Worlds (held bi-annually) would take place on American soil.

But last week, I actually told someone that perhaps it’s too much effort, even though I’m much healthier and stronger than 2009.

Getting and staying healthy is on your mind a lot, isn’t it? That’s one of the reasons you visit Lane 8. And it’s the reason I write Lane 8.

The real secret to health isn’t what or how we do it, and yet it’s the first thing people get hung up on. The real secret is finding the motivation to do whatever it takes.

Whatever it takes to never give up. To never quit. Ever.

Last night after dinner with a colleague, we walked a different route back to our hotel in Indianapolis. We are on the same street as the Capital building. Indianapolis is also home to USATF headquarters, and roughly three blocks away.

Guess what? We bump into the guy who runs the USATF online store and strike up a conversation. Small world? Karma? Opportunity? Fate?
