The question that we constantly wonder about, “What if?”

Condo living behind Disney's Magic Kingdom

We are bombarded with temptations for luxury and ease

The question that we constantly wonder about, “What if?”

What if I don’t exercise and then use that time to relax more, maybe watch more TV, volunteer more, or stay later at work?

Ever hope no one you know will see you here?

A classroom full of people ready and willing to talk

A classroom full of people ready and willing to talk

Ever hope no one you know will see you here? On the way home from work Disney last night, needed a quick stop at Publix and then dash off to Gold’s Gym.

Secretly hoping I wouldn’t run into anyone I know. Why? In a great hurry actually.

And what if I do bump into a neighbor or colleague. “Sorry, can’t talk, gotta get to the gym”.

Really?

But what if it was, “Sorry, can’t talk, gotta go to…

  • the doctor appointment
  • pick up our Son at school
  • get to a Church meeting

Why are those acceptable, but the gym seems indulgent and not an urgency?

The one reason why jeff noel will not accept any excuses

Sunset from Iowa Marriott

Excuses and sunsets are a daily occurrence on the road

I, jeff noel, will not accept any excuses. Everybody good with that?

He (or She) who accepts excuses, accepts defeat.

When exercise consists of doing nothing

University of Iowa Memorial Union

First one to arrive, last one to leave = long days

Being decently organized (but far from perfect) can help us anticipate challenging days in which exercise will become much more difficult to do.

Exercised through the weekend and Monday morning knowing today and yesterday would be long work days living in a hotel.

The benefit? No guilt.

And even joy in not exercising.

We’ve covered mental and physical, now scoot over to emotional (spiritual), click go.

Four wellness observations from Super Bowl Sunday

1. Traditions are steeped in over-eating and over-drinking

2. The athletes are warriors of health, strength, determination

What’s the greatest weapon against stress?

New Orleans Relax Spot foot massage business sign

finding time to relax is a daily challenge, and is never as easy as this sign states

New Orleans foot massage business

not everything is as it first seems… good thing we can control our thinking

Each day it’s the same. Focus on diet and exercise, or not. This can be incredibly stressful.

The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another. – William James

This photo was taken 50 minutes after the run began

dawn

the sun has not yet risen over jeff noel’s home – November 2, 2012 (yesterday)

This photo was taken 50 minutes after the run began. Dark and cold. Lonely.

Why? Why do it then. What’s the point?

The day jeff noel (any of us) stops exercising is the healthiest he’ll (any of us will) ever be. Every day after that is less healthy.

Exercise matters.

It dramatically improves your life, and in many cases, saves it.

How much competition is enough?

Masters Track

seeded 20 out of 34 in the M45-49 400 meters

Masters Track

moved to 10th overall, missing finals by two spots

How much competition is enough? You know, competition isn’t even necessary, except for one place – with the devil. We MUST find a million ways to stay motivated to keep moving.

For three years, 1999 – 2002… no competition, recreational running only.
…got bored, demotivated… ready to quit…

Three more years, 2002 – 2005… discovered the joy (and pain) of 5k’s.
…got bored, demotivated (again)… ready to quit…

Found Masters Track meets locally 2005-2007

In 2006, after six years solid running and conditioning foundation, the photos show, going into the 2006 Masters Track & Field National championships, jeff noel seeded number 20 of 34.

Finished 10th, missing the finals by two spots.

It doesn’t matter. What matters is it’s 2013 and I’m still running with a passion stronger than quitting – that’s 14 years, by the way.
